Muntingia calabura: Chemical Composition, Bioactive Component and Traditional Uses

Abstract: Muntingia calabura, commonly known as Jamaican cherry, is a plant species belonging to the family Muntingiaceae with variety of traditional uses. Following on these folklore claims, the works on phytochemicals constituents, traditional uses, pharmacological benefits and their mechanisms are presented in a number of studies as well as the in vitro and in vivo investigations. This species contains valuable phytochemicals with known medicinal properties that are beneficial to the well-being (e.g. anti-microbial, … Show more

“…Saponins can interact with many membrane lipids, such as phospholipids, precursors of prostaglandins, and other inflammatory mediators [13]. The mechanism of alkaloids in the inflammatory process is by suppressing the release of histamine by mast cells and reducing the secretion of IL-1 by monocytes and PAF (platelet activating factors) on platelets [14].…”

The plant has been used traditionally to treat gastric ulcer, prostate gland swelling, cold and headache, as well as to lower blood glucose level via decoction or poultice 6 . Positive pharmacological properties of MC were reported in various studies, including inhibition of gastric damages 7 , protection against bacterial infections 8 and anti-inflammatory activity against induced paw edema 9 .…”

“…The results of the phytochemical analysis of this fruit contain saponins, flavonoids, tannins, and steroids. In addition, M. calabura fruit is known to be enriched with phenolic compounds related to its antioxidant capacity, including gallocatechin, epigallocatechin, catechins, flavanols, naringenin, quercetin, gallic acid, vanillic acid, chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, ρ-coumaric acid, ferulic acid, Ɛ-hydroxycinnamic acid and myricetin (Mastuki et al, 2019). The results of research that has been conducted with fresh ripe M. calabura fruit showed an IC50 value of 41.10 µg/mL classified as a very strong antioxidant category.…”
