Mungbean yellow mosaic virus (MYMV): a threat to green gram (Vigna radiata) production in Asia

Abstract: Mungbean yellow mosaic virus (MYMV) disease is one of the most vicious diseases of green gram and has been renowned in India for more than five decades. It is caused by a group of geminiviruses belonging to the genus, begomovirus of the family, Geminiviridae. They are transmitted through whitefly in a persistent manner. The economic losses due to this virus account up to 85% in green gram which is spreading faster towards newer areas. The escalating economic importance of MYMV has resulted in the call for accu… Show more

“…The yield of mungbean has been stagnant over the years. Improvement in the yield of mungbean is becoming difficult, mainly due to the occurrence of pests and diseases (Karthikeyan et al, 2014). Major biological stresses of mungbean are mungbean yellow mosaic virus, leaf crinkle virus, anthracnose, powdery mildew, Cercospora leaf spot, gram pod borer, bruchid and whitefly (Pande et al, 2000).…”

“…Apart from an effective control of the virus vector B. tabaci breeding varieties with resistance or tolerance to yellow mosaic viruses will provide the most sustainable means for managing the disease (Karthikeyan et al 2014). In mungbean crop improvement program, the development of the NM varieties, namely NM 92 and NM 94, was the major breakthrough to tackle the problem of MYMD (Ali et al 1997;Shanmugsundaram et al 2009).…”

“…India is the world's largest mungbean producer accounting for about 65% of world's acreage and 54% of its global production (Singh, 2011). Mungbean contains carbohydrate (51%), protein (24% -26%), minerals (4%) and vitamins (3%) (Karthikeyan et al, 2014). Diverse uses of mungbean make it a more widely desired crop plant and are rapidly increasing its demand.…”

“…It is a self-pollinated diploid species with a chromosome number of 2n = 22 with an estimated genome size of 543 mega bases (Mb) (Parida et al, 1990;Kang et al, 2014). The crop is originated in India and predominantly grown in China, India, Pakistan and Thailand (Karthikeyan et al, 2014). Mungbean is a warm seasonal annual legume, grown mostly as a rotational crop with cereals like wheat and rice (Li et al, 2009 andAggarwal et al, 1992).…”
