Identification of mungbean lines with tolerance or resistance to yellow mosaic in fields in India where different begomovirus species and different Bemisia tabaci cryptic species predominate

Abstract: Mungbean (Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek) is an important pulse crop in India. A major constraint for improved productivity is the yield loss caused by mungbean yellow mosaic disease (MYMD). This disease is caused by several begomoviruses which are transmitted by the whitefly Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae). The objective of this study was to identify the predominant begomoviruses infecting mungbean and the major cryptic species of B. tabaci associated with this crop in India. The indigenous B.… Show more

“…These genotypes can be utilized in breeding program for the development of MYMV resistant varieties. Some researchers have tried to find out the source of resistance against MYMV in mungbean but most of them got little success in India (Singh et al, 1996;Awasthi and Singh, 2008;Salam et al, 2009;Mohan et al, 2014;Deepa et al, 2017 andNair et al, 2017). Further work should be carried out at the different agro-climatic zones of India for more consecutive seasons to check the stable reaction of mungbean genotypes against MYMV.…”

“…The insect vector and virus survive on different collateral and alternate hosts, including the main crop, which serves as the primary source of inoculum for yellow mosaic disease throughout the year (Figure 1). The indigenous B. tabaci cryptic species Asia II-1 was predominantly found in Northern India, whereas Asia II-8 was predominantly found in southern India [41]. As whitefly has a latent period of less than four hours, the virus can be transmitted efficiently to the host by whitefly [13,42,43].…”

“…Variability in pathogen populations exists among diverse geography; therefore, screening trials should be conducted multi-locations and years while developing breeding lines for disease resistance. Instability and breakdown of disease resistance in mungbean cultivars is a major challenge in breeding programs due to monogenic host resistance and high pathogenic variability (Nair et al, 2017). Integration of disease resistance traits without compromising valuable agronomic traits is a key challenge for mungbean breeders as linkage drags inhibit the proper use of genetic diversity from wild germplasm into the commercial cultivars (Acosta-Gallegos et al, 2008;Keneni et al, 2011).…”
