Multivariate Modeling of Mechanical Properties for Hot Runner Molded Bioplastics and a Recycled Polypropylene Blend

Abstract: Four sustainable materials including a recycled polypropylene blend, polybutylene adipate terephthalate, and two grades of polylactic acid are compared to a reference isotactic polypropylene. Tensile specimens were produced using a two-cavity, hot runner mold with fully automatic cycles per standard industrial practices to investigate the effect of melt temperature, injection velocity, cycle time, and screw speed on the mechanical properties. Multiple regression and principal component analyses were performed … Show more

“…Thermal Gravimetric Analysis (TGA) was carried out to evaluate polymer stability and degradation between 150°C and 500°C. [ 28 ] Both resins are semi‐crystalline polymers; however, the effects of processing on crystallization and texture replication were not investigated in this work. [ 35 ]…”

“…Table 1 reports some critical properties of each material. Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) was used to determine the thermal behavior between 50 C and 200 C. Thermal Gravimetric Analysis (TGA) was carried out to evaluate polymer stability and degradation between 150 C and 500 C. [28] Both resins are semi-crystalline polymers; however, the effects of processing on crystallization and texture replication were not investigated in this work. [35] The mold was designed to assemble the microstructured insert on the surface of a cylindrical cavity with a diameter of 10 mm and a depth of 1.5 mm.…”

“…Hot runner systems add significant cost but lower material usage and cycle time through the avoidance of molding in the cold runner system. [45,46] To support the cost and sustainability analysis, a valve gated hot runner design to make tensile bars was also considered. The hot runner mold (design shown at right in Figure 2) was designed to produce two 9.6 g tensile specimens in every molding cycle.…”
