Although peas cv. master pea was registered more than 25 years ago in Egypt, this variety showed a remarkable superiority over the varieties grown in all governorates of Egypt in terms of production, quality, and environmental adaptation to climate changes. This study intends to assess this cultivar's genetic and environmental traits, and to determine the degree of its deterioration over time to develop an appropriate plan for the maintenance, improvement, and conservation of this strategic variety to withstand changes in climatic conditions in Egypt. Many types of research have been conducted on the study and production of new varieties and lines of peas in Egypt; yet there is a dearth of multivariate analysis as a technique that can combine all variances for all examined qualities using statistics that rely on the algebra of matrices and extract statistical markers from which the researcher can make an appropriate selection program within cultivars without causing genetic erosion. The present experiment was conducted to achieve the following objectives: to monitor the performance of growth traits in the Master pea cultivar using multivariate analysis and UPOV descriptor; evaluation of yield characteristics, seed yield, and quality of Master pea cultivar using multivariate analysis and UPOV descriptor. In this study, one of the most important results obtained was that the phenotypic diversity within the population (measured using the UPOV descriptor) is an important aspect that reflects genetic diversity and the ability of this genetic diversity to withstand changes in the environment. Natural selection - over the many years of the inherited varieties of countries and societies - affects the diversity of phenotypic traits among the individuals of the population. It can be concluded from this study that the phenotypic traits identified in the UPOV descriptor and data analysis using multivariate analysis can show differences between lines within cultivars. Therefore, we recommend taking advantage of the UPOV descriptor and multivariate analysis as a successful way to obtain differences and relationships between lines in conservation, maintenance, and improvement programs for ancient and promising cultivars in the Arab Republic of Egypt.

Genetically diverse interspecific hybrids of Vitis were selected for resistance to Pratylenchus brachyurus. Three segregating populations with 57 hybrid crosses were evaluated.The parents included Vitis romanetiiC166-043 × 07355-075, 06354-047 × Cereza and 06354-047 × Nocera, selected from the germplasm bank at the University of California, Davis, the United States. The experiment was arranged in a randomized block design, with three replications and three plants per plot. Root mass, nematodes per gram of root and reproduction factor were determined and used as quantitative variables; 16 multi categoric descriptors were also evaluated. The traits were analyzed using the Ward-Modified Location Model procedure (Ward-MLM) for the composition of genotype groups. Genetic parameters and prediction of genetic values by Restricted Maximum Likelihood / Best Linear Unbiased Prediction (REML / BLUP) were assessed. The Ward-MLM classification strategy supported the formation of three homogeneous groups. Group I comprised 13 hybrids; Group II, 26 hybrids; and Group III, 18 hybrids. Groups II and III contained hybrids resistant to P. brachyurus. High broad sense heritability values were found for root mass, reproduction factor and nematodes per gram of root, which provided genetic gain and allowed selection of resistant genotypes available for cloning, since the total genetic variance occurred due to the dominance effects. Of the 57 genotypes assessed, those with the lowest genotypic values for reproduction factor were selected as resistant, including: CH3.2, CH3.23, CH3.8, CH3.37, CH3.38, CH3.41, CH3.36, CH2.1, CH2.7, CH1.1, CH1.3 and CH1.2.

Genetic progress in popcorn recurrent selection by a multivariate mixed-model approach

Recurrent selection is a viable alternative for popcorn breeding. However, frequent verification of progress attained is required. The aim of this study was to estimate the genetic progress attained for popping expansion (PE) and grain yield (GY) after four cycles of recurrent selection and to compare this progress with the expected progress estimated at the end of each cycle while considering the genetic relationships between the progenies via univariate and multivariate mixed-model approaches. To estimate the genetic parameters and gains from indirect selection, cycles 1, 2, 3, and 4 of a UFLA population were used. To estimate the genetic gains achieved, the following cycles were used: UFLA (original) and cycles 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4, evaluated in three environments. The multivariate approach provided more accurate estimates than did the univariate approach. There was genetic gain for PE in the recurrent selection program. In contrast, gain was not observed for GY using the different estimation strategies.A seleção recorrente é uma alternativa viável para o melhoramento da cultura do milho pipoca, todavia faz-se necessário verificar frequentemente o progresso obtido. O objetivo do presente trabalho foi estimar o progresso genético realizado para capacidade de expansão (PE) e rendimento de grãos (GY) após quatro ciclos de seleção recorrente e comparar com o progresso esperado, estimado ao final de cada ciclo, levando em consideração o relacionamento genético entre as progênies, via abordagem de modelos mistos univariada e multivariada. Na estimação dos parâmetros genéticos e ganhos com a seleção por via indireta, utilizou-se os ciclos 1, 2, 3 e 4 da população UFLA. Na estimação dos ganhos realizados, foram usados os seguintes ciclos: UFLA (original), e os ciclos 0, 1, 2, 3 e 4, avaliados em três ambientes. A abordagem multivariada proporcionou estimativas mais acuradas em relação à univariada. Houve ganho genético para PE no programa de seleção recorrente. Contrariamente, não foi observado ganho para GY usando as diferentes estratégias de estimação. Termos para indexação: Melhoramento de plantas; rendimento de grão; capacidade de expansão.
