Background The complexity of hospital management drives the improvement of scientific instruments available to measure their organizational efficiency. The incorporation of financial aspects as an agenda for the improvement of models for evaluating the efficiency of hospitals, and of the quality dimension have been indicated as gaps. Particularly, teaching hospitals are less profitable than other hospitals due to their teaching and research missions. Thus, this paper presents an integrative review of the literature about measuring the efficiency of teaching hospitals from 2011 to January 2023 to outline the main achievements, challenges, and recommendations in this research field. Methods We offer an integrative review across Scopus, ScienceDirect, Web of Science, Inderscience, and Springer Link databases. The search in databases generated 384 records, after removing duplicates, and following the PRISMA guidelines, 30 studies were considered eligible for this study. Results The studies included in this review revealed the scarcity of evaluation models tailored to the reality of teaching hospitals. Data Envelopment Analysis is the most frequently used evaluation method. There is a greater occurrence of inputs related to personnel and the most frequent outputs were those related to the number of visits and surgeries. We did not identify quality-oriented inputs, but we observed outputs (service level, and medical service satisfaction). The economic-financial inputs are related to expenses and costs, and the outputs are related to revenue, profit, and Resource Intensity Weight. Conclusions This study contributed to the improvement of the research field by pointing a direction for the advance of the measurement models. It is recommendable a combination of economic-financial indicators and quality measures. Regarding the financial dimension, the recommendation is to analyze the Return on Investment, and in the scope of the quality dimension, to verify the staff inputs from the point of view of the quality of the workforce. Also, there is a broken path for future research to consider input-oriented to physical and technological structure to measure the efficiency of teaching hospitals. We recommend developing a specific model to measure the efficiency of teaching hospitals to target the limitations appointed in this study.

In recent times, the increasing healthcare spending due to the rising health awareness signifies the importance of identifying the appropriate factors that influence patient satisfaction, weight assignment to these factors, and measurement of patient satisfaction becomes important. However, devising a robust objective weighting method for weight assignment of the factors and an analytical method for determining patient satisfaction scores has not been paid enough attention. Motivated by these issues, this work focuses on devising a robust objective weighting method for weight assignment of the factors that influence patient satisfaction, an analytical method for determining patient satisfaction, and real‐life implementation. We first propose a joint weighting methodology to allocate the weights to the factors by integrating the weights determined by different objective weighting methods, namely, mean weight, SD, entropy, criteria importance through intercriteria correlation, and preference selection index‐based approaches. Next, using the weights of these factors, we design a modified weighted aggregated sum product assessment method to determine a single patient satisfaction score by integrating the scores obtained from the weighted sum model and the weighted product model. The proposed methodology is applied to a real‐world dataset provided by a large healthcare provider and diagnostic clinic in Kolkata, India, to exhibit the real‐life implementation. The theoretical insights obtained through non‐parametric tests highlight the significant difference between joint weighting‐based and single weighting‐based methods. The context‐specific insights signify that the patients suffering from arthritis and hyperlipidaemia exhibit lower satisfaction. Also, the patients suffering from dengue express lower satisfaction than the patients suffering from malaria. Additionally, the healthcare provider should focus on improving the service quality of the departments such as ophthalmology, ENT, and dietician.

Background: A strategic plan is the main reference for the management in carrying out activities to be better and more developed according to the customer’s needs. A preliminary study on documents was conducted at the District General Hospital of Dr. (H.C) Ir. Soekarno in Bangka Belitung Province which has implemented a strategic plan. It showed that there were gaps between expectation and implementation of strategic plan.Aim: This study aimed to analyze aspects affecting the strategic plan implementation, including communication, resources, disposition, and bureaucratic structure.Methods: This study was a descriptive study using a qualitative approach. Primary data were obtained through in-depth interview with 10 (ten) informants while secondary data were obtained from document analysis. The data processing and analysis were done using content analysis. The research was conducted from 2 to 31 January 2019 at the District General Hospital of Dr. (H.C) Ir. Soekarno.Results: The findings showed that the implementation process of strategic plans has some gaps. They include (1) ineffective communication, (2) resource factor (lack of quality and quantity of Human Resources, inadequate information, insufficient effectiveness of budget utilization), (3) weak disposition of some implementers, and (4) irrelevant and unadjusted bureaucratic structure.Conclusion: The implementation process of strategic plan has not worked appropriately because some aspects, such as communication, resources, disposition, and bureaucratic structure are not well-provided. This study suggests that formulators should represent all elements. The strategic planning has to be formulated by involving internal and external parties. Monitoring, evaluation, communication, and coordination among stakeholders have to be carried out. Resources need to be improved, and the hospital needs to develop organization structure and conduct disposition guide for executives and implementors.Keywords: implementation, strategic plan, hospital.
