Multivariate Analysis of TOF-SIMS Spectra of Monolayers on Scribed Silicon

Abstract: Static time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) was performed on monolayers on scribed silicon (Si(scr)) derived from 1-alkenes, 1-alkynes, 1-holoalkanes, aldehydes, and acid chlorides. To rapidly determine the variation in the data without introducing user bias, a multivariate analysis was performed. First, principal components analysis (PCA) was done on data obtained from silicon scribed with homologous series of aldehydes and acid chlorides. For this study, the positive ion spectra, the neg… Show more

“…In this respect, TOF-SIMS outperformed DART-HRMS with the ability to characterize alkyl-terminated monolayers because of the extensive formation of both organic and mixed organic/ inorganic fragments from a variety of substrates including glass, silicon, and gold. 37,41,42 DART-HRMS of Oligo(Ethylene Glycol)-Terminated Monolayers. Whether DART-HRMS is applicable for identification of polyether monolayers, which are frequently applied to minimize biofouling, was addressed by analysis of monolayers , produced not only the aforementioned oligomers but also longer fragments (n = 1−8).…”

“…Various chemometrics tools, including PCA and cluster analysis, have been widely used to analyze ToF-SIMS data. [44][45][46][47][48][49][50] PCA reduces the dimensionality of data sets so that the relationships between the spectra in them can be better understood/visualized. In PCA, one 'plots' each spectrum as a single point in a hyperspace, where the axes of this space correspond to the different peaks used in the analysis.…”

“…wettability, [14] cell growth, [15] number of carbon atoms in monolayers. [16] ) By analyzing the regression vector value, it has been possible to elucidate the surface chemistry (the ToF-SIMS fragments) that is implicated in a particular surface property. [14] The composition and structure of binary [17,18] and ternary [18] adsorbed protein films have been investigated by a combination of ToF-SIMS and PLS to provide information complementary to that from 125 I-radiolabeling [17,18] and XPS.…”
