Multivariate analysis of factors influencing oral mucositis in allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation

Abstract: Little information is available regarding the effect of oral intervention on the outcome of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). We retrospectively analyzed the incidence of oral mucositis after allogeneic HSCT with or without oral intervention among 96 consecutive patients in our hospital between January 1988 and March 2006. We combined two oral intervention strategies: cryotherapy and oral health care. The former was applied beginning in 2003 for patients being treated with melphalan, and the latt… Show more

“…The incidence of oral mucositis in the patients with POHC was significantly lower than in those without POHC. The present data support the findings of an earlier retrospective analysis of patients who had received allogeneic HSCT [19]. Whereas the previous study included patients with several graft sources (bone marrow, peripheral blood, and cord blood), we investigated BMT patients alone to observe the effects of POHC more specifically in BMT cases.…”

“…This suggestion is based on two case series [16,20], four non-randomized clinical trials [14,15,19,21], and three RCTs [17, 18; 22 supplemented by 23] (Table 2). The collective evidence was scored as level III.…”
