Multitemporal Analysis of Soil Sealing and Land Use Changes Linked to Urban Expansion of Salamanca (Spain) Using Landsat Images and Soil Carbon Management as a Mitigating Tool for Climate Change

Abstract: The lack of urban sustainability is a widespread deficiency in urban agglomerations. To achieve adequate land use, we present a methodology that allows for: 1) the identification of the impacts caused by urban expansion since 1956 to the present in Salamanca (Spain); and 2) the promotion of a more sustainable future in urban development. A multi-temporal assessment of land use was made by remote sensing, while sustainability criteria were analyzed using the multicriteria analysis (MCA) with Geographical Inform… Show more

“…However, it is worthy to highlight that VINE and CROP have a high capacity to sequester C due to the reduced OM. If managed properly they could act as a C sink [85]. Several works highlighted that intensive agricultural practices contribute to greenhouse emissions [86][87][88].…”

“…Considering the fact that "socioeconomic dynamics are causing an overcrowding and accelerated expansion of cities worldwide", it should be pointed out that "commonly observed problems include pollution, mobility, vulnerability to extreme phenomena and more, which affect society due to the absence of urban planning", thus, "achieving the sustainability of cities must be a priority for governments, since the well-being of a large part of the population depends on it, as well as the fight against climate change" [37]. Most importantly, "creating knowledge and competencies for health promotion planning in the community" implicates, in fact, "strengthening competence and awareness in setting ( .…”

“…The vegetation present in the studied area is scarce due to the high anthropization of the area, derived mainly from the intense agricultural activity that has led to the deforestation of the climactic Mediterranean forest for centuries. Currently, together with the predominant crops, small redoubts of holm oak groves and holm oak pastures, as well as areas with natural grasslands and riparian vegetation [28,29] constitute the general cover of the environment.…”
