Multiplicity of Quorum Quenching Enzymes: A Potential Mechanism to Limit Quorum Sensing Bacterial Population

Abstract: Bacteria express certain of their characteristics especially, pathogenicity factors at high cell densities. The process is termed as quorum sensing (QS). QS operates via signal molecules such as acylhomoserine lactones (AHLs). Other bacteria inhibit QS through the inactivation of AHL signals by producing enzymes like AHL-lactonases and -acylases. Comparative genomic analysis has revealed the multiplicity of genes for AHL lactonases (up to 12 copies per genome) among spp. and that of AHL-acylases (up to 5 copie… Show more

“…Pathogenicity of these bacteria such as Aeromonas hydrophila, A. salmonicida, Vibrio anguillarum, V. harveyi, Yersinia ruckeri and Tenacibaculum maritimum is mediated by quorum sensing systems that are important for biofilm formation [95]. The use of quorum quenching enzymes has also been successful in reducing pathogenicity of these pathogens [96][97][98]. Bacteria derived from fish microbiome have also been shown to produce natural products that inhibit formation of biofilms and therefore promote detachment of gram-negative pathogens [50].…”

“…Comparative genome analysis has revealed the presence of several copies of genes encoding AHL acylases and AHL lactonases in Pseudomonas spp. and Bacillus spp., respectively [62]. Studies have also revealed remarkable biodiversity and polymorphism in genes of AHL lactonases in Bacillus spp.…”

“…Considering this, in conjunction with biofilm resistance to conventional drugs, alternative treatments for dental caries are stimulated. Accordingly, the use of some quorum-sensing (QS) molecules as antimicrobials has been reported [11][12][13][14]. These molecules regulate gene expression, cellular differentiation, and other functions [11][12][13][14][15].…”

“…Accordingly, the use of some quorum-sensing (QS) molecules as antimicrobials has been reported [11][12][13][14]. These molecules regulate gene expression, cellular differentiation, and other functions [11][12][13][14][15]. Among the QS molecules, farnesol, an acyclic alcohol secreted by Candida species such as C. albicans and C. dubliniensis [16], has received attention for presenting antibiofilm activity.…”
