“…Excluding neurofibromatosis, multiple meningiomas have been shown to result from dissemination in the cerebrospinal fluid at the time of operation [6,14] or to spread via the blood stream [11], In the absence of neurofibro matosis the presence of multiple meningiomas as in our case is very in frequent and the presence of these tumors in separate neuroaxial compart ments is extremely rare. Location of tumors in the foramen magnum is most unusual [7], Most of the reports are of benign tumors.…”

“…Spinal meningioma is known to be the second most common tumour affecting the intradural extramedullary region of the spinal canal, forming approximately 25% of primary spinal cord tumours (13,19). Yet, only a few cases of late recurrence of meningiorna (3,4,12,13,22) and multiple spinal meningiomas have been reported (1,5,14,18,19,21,23) in comparison with the incidence of imracranial meningiorna (2,26,27). Fourteen previous cases are reported in the literatures (Tab.…”

“…(3) The tumour in the thoracic region is unusual as it recurred, whether it be metastatic or multiple in origin. The differentiation of multiple meningioma from recurrence cannot readily be de termined (9,10,22,25,27). Metrizamide tOtal myelography by the lumbar route should be performed first, in order to decide the level of the lesion.…”

“…This hypothesis is supported by histologic and cytogenetic differences observed between different meningiomas in a single patient. 10 , 13 , 15 , 23–28 Conversely, the monoclonal hypothesis proposes that MM originates from a single neoplastic transformed clone that subsequently spreads along the meninges to form multiple monoclonal meningiomas. This hypothesis is supported by the fact that most MM present the same histological features and molecular genetic analyses, including detection of a common NF2 gene mutation that strongly favors a monoclonal origin.…”
