Multiple angle digital holography for the shape measurement of the unpainted tympanic membrane

Abstract: The shape of the tympanic membrane (TM) plays an important role in sound transmission through the ear for hearing. Previously we developed a high-speed holographic system employing a tunable wavelength laser for rapid TM shape measurement. However, the tunable laser illumination was not sufficient to measure the shape of the unpainted TM due to the semi-transparency of the TM and short exposure time of the camera. This paper presents a new multiple angle illumination technique that allows us to use a higher po… Show more

“…Note that such problem can arise also when monitoring shape changes of objects with rough, non-reflective surfaces [51][52][53] or in characterizing discontinuous deep surfaces [54]. The solution can be the utilization of additional optical methods, e.g., multiplexed or frequency-sweeping digital holography [54][55][56][57].…”

“…in order to suppress undesired optical aberration. The interference phase can be used to determine the desired physical quantity such as temperature [8], shape [9], refractive index [10], vibration amplitudes [11] or density/ isentropic Mach number [7] as in this particular case. So far, we have considered only single wavelength SCI, with the unambiguity range of the wavelength of the light.…”

“…The data measured from different views are registered preliminarily with recognizable features in the overlapping areas. Additional optical elements, such as mirrors, can increase the one-shot measurement range [19], but the actual implementation is not flexible and limited by the object size [20][21].…”
