Multimodal Optical Medical Imaging Concepts Based on Optical Coherence Tomography

Abstract: Optical medical imaging techniques in general exhibit outstanding resolution and molecule-specific contrast. They come however with a limited penetration in depth and small field of view. Multimodal concepts help to combine complementary strengths of different imaging technologies. The present article reviews the advantages of optical multimodal imaging concepts using optical coherence tomography (OCT) as core technology. In particular we first discuss polarization sensitive OCT, Doppler OCT and OCT angiograph… Show more

“…The quantitative analysis of the iron load internalized into granulocytes using the MRI, ICP-MS and NIRF techniques shows values ( Table 7) that are in accordance with the signal detection limitations as a function of sensitivity, spatial resolution, temporal resolution and the concentration of contrast agent [38,39]. In studies by Shanhua et al [54,86], quantification analysis of the iron load of the SPIONs internalized into granulocytes was performed using the ICP technique, which showed an iron load of 0.1265 pg/cell (0.1265 ppm/106 cell) in the best strategy of internalization using LPS and 5 mg/mL SPIONs.…”

“…Isolation purity, viability and yield are important factors for evaluating each method and ensuring cellular integrity [29,[34][35][36].The noninvasive evaluation of acute inflammatory processes makes it possible to analyze molecular and cellular processes in vivo, usually based on targeting specialized cells such as macrophages, lymphocytes or granulocytes to the desired target [37]. Noninvasive imaging techniques that provide structural, functional and molecular information in preclinical and clinical studies include CT, MRI, positron emission tomography (PET), single-photon emission computed tomography (SPETC) and near-infrared fluorescence (NIRF) imaging, among others [38][39][40], each of which has advantages and limitations. The MRI technique offers high spatial resolution but low sensitivity, high cost and long scanning time.…”

“…To facilitate ROI relocation, CMI also aims at setting up hardware-fused hybrid setups that inherently co-localize the same ROI due to their joint coordination system. Apart from well-known commercially available PHI scanners (such as PET/CT, SPECT/CT, or PET/MRI), as described in section State-of-the-Art, examples include (i) a variety of hybrid AFM and FM setups [30,171,172], (ii) first implementations of integrated EM-FM setups [111,173], (iii) several combined setups of OCT with photoacoustics or non-linear microscopy [174], and (iv) diverse hardwarebased approaches to combine OI techniques with CT or MRI [175]. Nevertheless, in certain cases, relocation across single modality systems using cross-platform transport beds for CMI may provide superior performance compared to hybrid systems where compromises may have been made in the integration process.…”
