Multilocular Unicystic Ameloblastoma of Mandible

Abstract: Introduction. We report a rare case of unicystic ameloblastoma (UA) of mandible which showed multilocular radiolucency on the left side of mandible on radiographic examination which is very unusual, and the majority of the cases of UAs till date has been reported of unilocular radiolucency. On histopathological examination, an odontogenic cystic lining that proliferates that intraluminally resembling ameloblastomatous epithelium was observed, leading to a definitive diagnosis of unicystic ameloblastoma. Case P… Show more

“…3 The lesion may resemble an odontogenic keratocyst and sometimes the differentiation may be possible only on histopathological correlation. 4 There are, however, a few points which may aid in the differentiation radiologically. According to literature odontogenic keratocysts have lower CT density with higher heterogeneity than Ameloblastomas.…”

“…29 The stellate reticulum-like cells are absent and central cells may be polyhedral. 28,29 The nuclear orientation of peripheral cells is different from the other histopathological patterns of ameloblastomas: they are usually cuboidal or columnar and do not show reverse polarity (Figure 4). BCAs show a close resemblance to BCC on histopathology; however a demarcation can be made on immunohistochemical grounds by using Ber-EP4.…”

“…Unicystic ameloblastoma and orthokeratinized odontogenic cyst (OOC) though present with the same clinical and radiographic features, Histologically Unicystic ameloblastoma has ameloblasticepithelial lining which is pathognomic of this cyst. The suprabasilar areas often loosen up giving the appearance like a stellate reticulum [15]. OKC shares similar characteristics with Orthokeratinized odontogenic cyst with respect to age of occurrence and site, yet these two lesions differ in their biological activity [16] OKC'S tend to grow in antero posterior direction within the medullary cavity of the bone and may cause an obvious bone expansion [13].…”
