Multilayer Medium Density Particleboard Using Castor Oil-Based Polyurethane Resin and Hevea Brasiliensis Wood

Abstract: This work aimed to study the feasibility of using castor oil-based polyurethane (PU) resin, and rubberwood for the production of particleboards. Multilayer panels were produced using particles taken from RRIM 600 and GT1 clones of Hevea brasiliensis trees. Urea-formaldehyde (UF) and PU were used for bonding the particles. Physico-mechanical characterization was done according to the specifications of the European standards for wood-based panels. The average results were compared to values pre-established by th… Show more

“…The results regarding absorption tests in OSB panels can be attributed to its greater contact area between particles (strands) and water in contrast to plywood sheets. Muzel et al (2014) produced particleboards with castor oil polyurethane resin and wood of Hevea brasiliensis trees. The best results indicated the potential for the use of castor oil polyurethane resin and rubberwood for particleboard production.…”

“…An important component of panels is the resin, which can influence physical and mechanical properties depending on its grammage and chemical composition. Several resins are available, such as urea-formaldehyde, phenol-formaldehyde, and castor oil-based polyurethane (PU) resins (Muzel et al 2014;Zhou and Pizzi 2014;Mantanis et al 2018;Nakanishi et al 2018). During the manufacturing process, urea-formaldehyde and phenolformaldehyde resins release formalin gas, which is toxic for humankind (Muttil et al 2014;Zhou and Pizzi 2014;Mantanis et al 2018).…”
