Multilayer based interferential-plasmonic structure: metal cluster 3D grating combined with dielectric mirror

Abstract: Abstract-A three dimensional (3D) photonic microstructure consisting of metal clusters embedded in dielectric matrix is coated with a dielectric mirror. The produced photonic structure shows optical behaviour that combines the interferential effects of the multilayer stack and the surface plasmon resonance of metal clusters. Due to its feasibility and the possibility to widely modify the optical properties of the resulting interferential-plasmonic structure, this approach represents a promising method for the … Show more

“…Applications resulting from such combination are highly absorbing optical coatings, 3,4 high luminosity reflectors, 5 and three-dimensional photonic structures. 6,7 In order to design multilayer structures that include metal-dielectric composites it is required to have an accurate knowledge of the effective dielectric function of the composite. From the application point of view, it is desirable that this effective dielectric function can be tailored as widely as possible.…”

“…The concept of oriented 3-D Au nanospheres has attracted attention in the past year. [66][67][68] For example, the modeling revealed the presence of multiple longitudinal or transverse modes in these 3-D plasmonic crystals, 67 while a 3-D stack of metallic clusters has been reported to have plasmonic properties. 68,69 These preliminary results demonstrate the feasibility and potential of 3-D plasmonic nanostructures.…”

“…However, its scope of application is restricted due to the high absorption coefficient of metals. In order to construct high power systems such as laser generators used in optical telecommunication or Interferometers with thin strips, dielectric mirrors should be used [2][3][4][5][6]. For a mirror fabricated with ZnS and cryolite, it is easy to reach the absorption level of less than 0.5%.…”
