Multifunctional polyethylene (PE)/polypropylene (PP) bicomponent fiber filter with anchored nanocrystalline MnO2 for effective air purification

Abstract: A multifunctional composite filter combined with nanocrystalline MnO2 and a PE/PP bicomponent fiber by introducing corona charge technology has been fabricated and exhibited excellent filtration, adsorption and catalytic abilities in air pollutant abatement.

“…Electret melt-blown nonwovens have been proved to be a desired material to filtrate fine particulate matter due to the electrostatic force, which can significantly increase the filtration efficiency without increasing the pressure drop. e corona charging apparatus used in this study has been described in detail in the previous paper [25]. Briefly, it consists of a high-voltage power supplier, an array of needles, and a copper holder.…”

“…To tackle this problem, the public have to wear mask filters in the open air, even though they are bulky and resistant to air flow; and must use central air conditioning or ventilation system to purify the indoor air . Fibrous filters, which function as the core part of these methods, are of especial importance and have been widely used owing to their advantages of high cost‐efficiency and ease of large‐scale production . However, due to the inherent limit on their micro‐sized diameters (usually >5 µm), traditional fibrous filters, for instance, melt‐blown microfibers and glass microfibers still suffer from fatal structure defect of large pore size when they have low thickness.…”

“…The Raman spectrum in Figure b exhibited two peaks centered at 1344 cm −1 and 1599 cm −1 , respectively, confirming the existence of rGO in ZnSnS 3 @rGO . Moreover, as shown in Figure c, the N 2 adsorption‐desorption isotherm of ZnSnS 3 @rGO exhibited an IV type profile according to the IUPAC classification . The specific surface area of ZnSnS 3 @rGO was 110.79 m 2 g −1 , while its average pore diameter was 51.3 Å.…”
