Multifunctional Dual Ionic-Covalent Membranes for Wound Healing

Abstract: Wound healing generally has four stages: hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation, and remolding. Most wound dressings only just take one or two phases into account. Herein, to develop a novel wound dressing that works at different stages, the blended alginate sodium/carboxymethyl chitosan membranes with a hydrogel-like structure are fabricated through a freeze-drying process together with a dual-ion (Sr2+ and Zn2+) cross-linking approach. The fabricated membranes show excellent properties in the swelling ratio… Show more

“…In the early phase of wound healing, a race between cells and bacteria to the surface of the wound occurs 52 . Therefore, the antibacterial wound dressings play an important role in preventing wound infection, so that they can shorten the inflammatory stage and then promote wound healing 35,53 . In this study, the antibacterial effect of SF/PCL/MH membranes against E. coli, S. aureus , and C. albicans was investigated.…”

“…The antibacterial activity against E. coli, S. aureus , and C. albicans was evaluated as our previous study 35 . In short, the first step, E. coli , S. aureus , and C. albicans bacterial fluid (10 8 –10 9 CFU/ml) were diluted 10,000 times with liquid medium and PBS to obtain a standard bacterial solution (1.5 × 10 5 ~ 3.5 × 10 5 ).…”

“…As the largest organ of the human body, the skin can be used to protect the human body from harm and the invasion of other microorganisms. 1 Bacterial infections caused by injures of the skin can delay wound healing and cause unpredictable harm. 2 However, wound dressing can be used to cover wounds or other injuries, and promote wound healing.…”
