Multifrequency AFM: from origins to convergence

Abstract: Since the inception of the atomic force microscope (AFM) in 1986, influential papers have been presented by the community and tremendous advances have been reported. Being able to routinely image conductive and non-conductive surfaces in air, liquid and vacuum environments with nanoscale, and sometimes atomic, resolution, the AFM has long been perceived by many as the instrument to unlock the nanoscale. From exploiting a basic form of Hooke's law to interpret AFM data to interpreting a seeming zoo of maps in t… Show more

“…Remarkable achievements have been made in AFM since its invention (Binnig, Quate, & Gerber, ). However, most of them focused on improving the scanning speed, enlarging the imaging area, and overcoming limitations of working environment (Santos, Lai, Olukan, & Chiesa, ; Schitter et al, ). Therefore, there are still several issues restricting the application of conventional AFMs, for example, as shown in Figure a, dependence on wire and/or network cable connecting to a computer, and reliance on indoor AC mains supply and low/high‐voltage DC power supply which are generally bulky, making it impossible for conventional AFMs to be miniaturized and work in outdoor or field conditions where no AC electricity is available.…”

“…[12][13][14][15][16] Meanwhile, in recent years, multifrequency atomic force microscopy (MF-AFM) has attracted more and more attentions from researchers in this field. 17,18 In spite of the above advances achieved in AM-AFM, however, to the authors' knowledge, AM-AFM based on higher flexural modes of a cantilever has never been specially addressed. This work thus aims at investigating the dynamics of different flexural modes in AM-AFM.…”
