Multielectron Electrode Reaction Kinetics with RDE and RRDE: An Advanced Electrochemical Laboratory Experiment

Abstract: Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), as a multielectron electrode reaction, is an important electrochemical reaction in the field of electrochemical energy storage systems. Herein, a new advanced electrochemical laboratory experiment is designed for undergraduates to master the preparation of oxygen reduction catalytic electrode. Students can use rotating disk electrode (RDE) and rotating ring-disk electrode (RRDE) to evaluate the properties of the ORR catalyst and expound the kinetics mechanism of multielectron e… Show more

“…5d). 50 The high ORR activity of Fe@Fe/N-G-800 is further supported by the minor Tafel slope of 69 mV dec −1 , which is smaller than that of the commercial Pt/C catalyst (111 mV dec −1 ) (Fig. 5e).…”

“…Meanwhile, the cyclic electrode Pt electrode can decompose the H 2 O 2 produced on the disk electrode and generate the ring current at the set constant voltage. 45,46 The detected disk and ring currents can be used to evaluate the H 2 O 2 selectivity and the reaction paths of the catalyst.…”

“…Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), and CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) are typical primary electrode reactions for these devices. A deep understanding of the mechanisms of such electrode reactions in these devices as well as factors which limit their kinetics can help greatly in developing efficient electrocatalysts and in optimizing the reaction conditions. To this end, extensive studies on the kinetics or electrocatalytic activity of both the well-defined single-crystalline electrodes as model catalysts and the synthesized nanocatalysts toward these reactions have been carried out using three-electrode systems. …”
