Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) plays an important role in investigating the flow in products. With the help of optimization algorithms, CFD-based optimization is increasingly applied in product development to improve the product design. Even though this approach is becoming increasingly mature, it is faced with the problem that the CFD solver is not able to correctly respond to the design changes under the batch mode, leading to incorrect simulation and optimization results. Besides, there is no work dedicated to dealing with the design points which are physically invalid during the optimization process. In this paper, the intelligent CFD solver is employed to analyze the flow at each design point and to set up the solver with the best fit simulation models. Based on correct simulation results, the physically invalid design points are automatically removed from the design space. Metamodeling is used to process the valid design space with simulation results provided by the intelligent solver and derive the optimum. A prototype system is developed incorporating ANSYS, Python, and MATLAB. The design optimization of a steam control valve is used as the case study to demonstrate how the proposed system works. The optimization is conducted based on the metamodel built by response surface model and radial basis function to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

This paper considered optimization method of appending a shape on a disc in an attempt to improve core functions, which are inherent in flow characteristics. The paper also verifies the optimization method of appendage shape with a Class 150 200A Butterfly valve. Then the design of experiment (DOE) with an orthogonal array is performed to analyze the effect of form parameters by grey relational analysis and analysis of mean (ANOM). And this study sets flow coefficient as an object functions for optimization, and the conventional disc model and the optimal appendage shape on disc model are compared by computational fluid analysis. The paper concludes that an optimal appendage shape on disc model achieves wider usability by a wider operating range.

Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (MDO) has emerged as a new technology dealing with the design of complex systems. MDO is employed in designing of diesel engine structure for improving the system performance in this paper. According to the analysis of the Distribution Cam Mechanism (DCM), ventilation, vibration and mechanical performance are selected as indicators. Basing kinematic analysis by ADAMS, the fullness coefficient, contact stress and the maximum acceleration performances are obtained. Under the environment of MDO, multi-objective genetic algorithm is used to overcome the difficulty of convergence in optimization of the DCM and obtain the best Pareto solution set. In addition, approximate model is proposed to improve the design process and proved to be efficiency. Finally, the results of multi-objective optimization are compared to single-objective optimization, which demonstrates that fullness coefficient and contact stress of the diesel engine DCM is improved greatly without reduce the ventilation performance. The effective and efficient collaboration mechanism for coordinating coupled disciplines in the process of diesel engine design and optimization is developed in this research, which owns a high theory and application value.
