Multidisciplinary Analysis of Differences Between Finisher and Non-finisher Ultra-Endurance Mountain Athletes

Abstract: Ultra-endurance races are one of the most physically and psychologically demanding sports, depending performance on several elements. The aims of the present study were (i) to analyze differences in selected psychophysiological parameters between finisher and non-finisher ultra-endurance mountain athletes, and (ii) to analyze modifications in psychophysiological parameters before and after an ultra-endurance mountain event. Selected psychophysiological variables were assessed in 46 finishers and 24 nonfinisher… Show more

“…This fact could also negatively affect operative pace control, increasing the coefficient of variation in the running segment. In this line, and even athletes in these ultra-endurance probes showed large resilience and stable psychological profile [3]. The maintenance of high motivation in such big events is an important fact that could affect the pace control and performance, but future studies should control this variable to allow to a better compression of psychological and physiological patter related with success in this extreme sport events.…”

“…There are some professions that elicit a large stress response, modifying the homeostasis of the natural organism. In professions such as the military, police, firefighting, and even among elite athletes, individuals frequently experience stress responses beyond the body’s natural limits [ 2 , 3 , 4 ]. However, stress is not only present in these professions; medical personnel, drivers, journalists, and even teachers and students exhibit elevated stress levels as a result of their exposure to their work context [ 5 , 6 , 7 ].…”

“… Weir et al (2002) noted that master level women dedicated more time to endurance and technique training than their male counterparts, who spent more time focusing on swimming speed and power training. However, younger age group swimmers could be more motivated with a stronger resilience and more stable psychological profile with a better pace control than older ones ( Belinchón-deMiguel et al, 2019 ).…”
