Multichannel SAR-GMTI in Maritime Scenarios With F-SAR and TerraSAR-X Sensors

Abstract: This paper explores the ground moving target indication (GMTI) capabilities of the German Aerospace Center's state-of-the-art airborne (F-SAR) and spaceborne (TerraSAR-X) synthetic aperture radars (SARs) when operating over maritime scenarios. The performance of classical dual channel GMTI techniques, such as displaced phase center antenna (DPCA) and alongtrack interferometry (ATI), as well as the promising adaptive techniques, like extended DPCA (EDPCA) and imaging spacetime adaptive processing (ISTAP) have b… Show more

“…The average Doppler power spectrum (10), which was estimated before, is further used to normalize the "original" "blue" range-Doppler data blocks (14) (see also Figure 1a,b). The CFAR threshold is then applied individually to each of these data blocks to detect the ship pixels (15).…”

“…For such applications, airborne platforms are very beneficial due to their flexibility to collect data with very high resolution and with short revisit and long observation times [11][12][13]. Furthermore, the use of multiple receiving channels offers additional advantages like clutter cancellation which leads to efficient target detection [14,15].…”

“…The speed of the moving target vehicle is 30 km/h and the direction of movement is 45 o with respect to the flight direction. According to (9), this arrangement gives us a normalized relative speed of γ = 0.9553. Figure 2(a) shows the whole SAR image of the simulated ground scene.…”

“…A simulated ground moving target has been used to illustrate the proposal. A similar approach is introduced recently in [8], [9] where the data has been adaptively refocused using the matched filter bank approach jointly with Range Doppler.…”

“…The clutter cancellation is important to moving target detection especially when the target is buried in strong clutter. The conventional detection techniques include along-track interferometry (ATI) [4], displaced phase center antenna (DPCA) [5] and space-time adaptive processing (STAP) [6]. The main disadvantages are that the increased system complexity and high cost due to increasing the number of antennas.…”
