Multicenter study of the European Assessment Group for Lysis in the Eye (EAGLE) for the treatment of central retinal artery occlusion: design issues and implications. EAGLE Study report no. 1

Abstract: The EAGLE Study is the first randomized prospective clinical trial to compare conservative medical treatment and local intra-arterial fibrinolysis in patients with CRAO. The results of this study should enable ophthalmologists and neuroradiologists to improve the therapy of patients with acute CRAO. To April 2005, treatment is only justified in randomized multicenter studies because of the limited therapeutical visual outcome. We welcome new study centers to join.

“…9 This is usually set at 80 years, 4,32-34 though 75 35 and 85 years 2,36 have also been used. In a pooled analysis of 101 patients from 4 prospective studies, patients Ն80 years had a lower likelihood of favorable outcome (OR, 0.34; 95% CI, 0.1-1.1; P ϭ .07) and higher mortality rates (OR, 3.62; 95% CI, 1.15-11.36; P ϭ .027) following IA thrombolysis for acute stroke after adjusting for recanalization.…”

“…An ongoing multicentre study is testing efficacy. 30 Localized application of hypothermia to the affected eye is a simple technique that decreased injury in animal studies after ischaemia, 29 and it is probably reasonable to institute in humans because of minimal risk.…”

“…5 There has been recent interest in the use of tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) with two recent randomized controlled trials on the treatment of acute CRAO. 6,7 The aim of this review article is to provide a comprehensive overview of the epidemiology, risk factors, and clinical presentation of CRAO, but more importantly to review the evidence for treatment.…”
