Multicenter evaluation of analytical characteristics of the Elecsys® Periostin immunoassay

Abstract: The performance evaluation of the Elecsys Periostin immunoassay including a multicenter precision analysis demonstrated that the assay is suitable for measuring serum periostin at clinically important concentrations around 50ng/mL.

“…In order to address the fact that many of the studies discussed use different assays to measure periostin and report different levels, we have performed a comparison between two of the most published and characterized methods; the assay developed by Izuhara and colleagues and the Elecsys ® periostin assay developed by Roche Diagnostics . There was a strong correlation between results obtained using the two techniques, although the ShinoTest assay consistently detected higher levels than the Roche Elecsys ® assay.…”

“…Additionally, a number of periostin assays have been used in asthma research, of which only two have published data with respect to stability and variability 36,37 , and none are commercially available for clinical practice currently. To justify its development as a commercially available test, periostin must show its value as uniquely superior to other type-2 biomarkers in identifying asthma phenotypes which preferentially respond to specific asthma treatments and monitor their response to such treatments.…”

“…This is probably related to the decreases of length growth, the increased periostin serum values in small childhood being mainly related to its secretion in bone tissue [37]. As a consequence, [14]. Taking all these considerations into account, periostin values are exposed to multiple variables.…”

“…Bronchial asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease affecting more than 334 million people all over the world [14]. The involvement of periostin in type II inflammatory reaction is currently under intense study, in order to improve the therapeutic means in asthmatic disease, mainly in patients diagnosed with severe type of bronchial asthma, with unfavorable response to corticosteroid therapy.…”
