Multibody Simulation for the Vibration Analysis of a Turbocharged Diesel Engine

Abstract: In this paper, a multibody calculation methodology has been applied to the vibration analysis of a 4-cylinder, 4-stroke, turbocharged diesel engine, with a simulation driven study of the angular speed variation of a crankshaft under consideration of different modeling assumptions. Moreover, time dependent simulation results, evaluated at the engine supports, are condensed to a vibration index and compared with experimental results, obtaining satisfactory outcomes. The modal analysis also considers the damping … Show more

“…In the case of PCB boards and integrated circuits, their reliability depends, among other factors, on the possibility to endure vibration loads and impacts that can affect their performance. Modal analysis can thus be a very useful tool for engineers to reveal vulnerable areas and avoid premature failure [6][7][8].…”

“…The optimized data are modeled and imported into ANSYS, and the computer simulation software ANSYS Wrokbench and Pro/E are interfaced and exchanged [22,23]. Before the simulation analysis, the parameters of the model are set and the mesh is divided.…”

“…The optimized data are modeled and imported into ANSYS, and the computer simulation software ANSYS Wrokbench and Pro/E are interfaced and exchanged [22,23]. According to the simulation results shown in Figures 7 and 8, the first six modal values are within 68 Hz to 125 Hz, especially according to the first three modal values and cloud image analysis, which is far from resonance, which means very stable.…”

“…However, even with such a system, it is not easy to get rid of the vibration owing to the motion complexity in a diesel engine, although the development of electronics, sensors, and computer-aided measurement technology has led to improved vibration isolation systems in marine engineering. There have been many studies to find the vibration characteristics of diesel engines (1,(7)(8)(9)(10)(11)(12) and on how to reduce vibration with various vibration isolation systems. (13)(14)(15)(16) However, there has been little research on how to precisely locate vibration isolators.…”
