Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) have structures characterized by remarkable mechanical and electronic properties. However, their applications can be hindered because of their hydrophobic nature, lack of homogeneity due to impurities, and their variable sizes. Thus, MWCNT was treated by acidic oxidation (H 2 SO 4 3:1 HNO 3 ), seeking out to evaluate the influence of this functionalization on the electrochemical reduction behavior of nitrofurazone applying cyclic voltammetry, the glassy carbon surface having been modified as working electrode. The MWCNT functionalization was characterized by using scanning electron microscopy, infrared and Raman spectroscopies, thermogravimetric analysis, and potentiometric titration. Differences between non-functionalized and functionalized MWCNT were observed, suggesting that carboxylic groups were introduced in the carbon nanotube walls. Moreover, the glassy carbon surface modification was also studied concerning the dispersing agents for functionalized MWCNT. Several solvents of different natures, hydrophilic and lipophilic, were evaluated. The best dispersion associated with electrochemical response of nitrofurazone was obtained with 1,3-dioxolane as dispersing agent, which presented higher affinity with MWCNT than the other solvents. The electrochemical response of the glassy carbon electrode modified with MWCNT was evaluated by nitrofurazone voltammetric behavior with emphasis on the R−NO 2 =R−NO Á− 2 couple generation and its kinetic stability.

Hierarchical microstructure of nanoparticles of calcium carbonate/epoxy composites: Thermomechanical and surface properties

Calcium carbonate nanoparticles of calcite structure and nanometric size were successfully synthesized by mechanochemical processing using low energy mill (100 rpm). Transmission electron micrographs demonstrated that the nanoparticles tend to form agglomerates of approximately 1 μm due to their high surface energy. A study of structure and properties of composite materials resulting from the addition of CaCO 3 nanoparticles at concentrations of 1, 2.5 and 5 wt% to epoxy resin was made. Epoxy/1 wt% CaCO 3 and epoxy/2.5 wt% CaCO 3 composites displayed an increase of 8 and 12°C in glass transition temperature (T g ), respectively. Scanning electron microscopy images of composites revealed a hierarchical structure of micrometric sized extended aggregates of nanometric calcium carbonate particles homogeneously distributed in the polymer matrix. This morphology explains the increase in hydrophobicity, as well as gains in Young's moduli, which were greater than 59% with respect to the neat epoxy as measured by Nanoindentation. Therefore, this work demonstrates that the optimum range of concentration up to 2.5 wt% of high-quality nano CaCO 3 guarantees thermal, mechanical and surface significant improvements associated with a hierarchical microstructure-nanostructure, which ultimately extend the possibilities of application of epoxy materials for nowadays challenges.

Flexible strain sensors based on epoxy/graphene composite film with long molecular weight curing agents have critical roles in the development of advanced polymer composite films that combine mechanical robustness with functional properties such as electrical conductivity for many applications. In this experiment, flexible epoxy/GnP composite film is obtained by using flexible curing agent J2000. A percolation threshold of electrical conductivity was observed at merely 0.97 vol% GnPs, and the composite electrical conductivity increased to 10 −6 S/cm at 5.0 vol %. The composite films were mechanically strong enough to be used as a flexible strain sensor. Our sensor can clearly detect the stretching of the forearm skin caused by a fist pulse and back of hand movement and achieve an enhancement of the resistance signal of up to 50%. When the GnPs content reaches 5%, Young's modulus and tensile strength increase to 21 MPa and 1.3 MPa, respectively.
