Multi-Standard WIMAX/UMTS System Framework Based on SDR

Abstract: In this work, we are proposing a novel approach targeted to handling signal processing and data transmission tasks related to a multi-standard terminal encompassing WiMAX and UMTS standards. We shall present an innovative Software-Defined-Radio (SDR)-based framework which will be able to arrange the digital processing tasks concerning the baseband level of the multistandard transceiver architecture. In particular, an objectoriented model will be proposed for the baseband level implementation. The general struc… Show more

“…For these cases, emerging multi-standards, multi-bands, multi-modes and multi protocol systems have been developed. Software Defined Radio (SDR) has the ability of changing the characteristics of a transmitting and receiving radio device without physically modifying the hardware [1]. Thus, SDR can serve as a fundamental technology where all these systems can be implemented in one hardware platform.…”

“…The work of the SDR includes hardware adaptability by software means. Thus SDR is one possible way to realize a device with mobility, flexibility, and re-configurability [1]. In response to a myriad of communication standards currently available, radio designers are architecting SDR systems that have the ability to support present and future waveform specifications.…”

“…same silicon block is used for both technologies. Also, controlling the signal selection of the convergence at the PHY layer may increase the complexity of the baseband chip [13], especially when this control can be easily implemented by software at the application layer.…”
