Multi-parametric effect in predicting tumor histological grade by using susceptibility weighted magnetic resonance imaging in tongue squamous cell carcinoma

Abstract: BackgroundSusceptibility weighted imaging (SWI) is helpful for depicting hemorrhage, calcification, and increased vascularity in some neoplasms, which may reflect tumor grade. In this study, we aimed to apply SWI in patients with oral tongue squamous cell carcinomas (OTSCCs) and relate multi-parametric effect to tumor histological grade prediction.MethodsPreoperative MR examinations were performed on a 1 .5T MRI scanner with T1-, T2- and contrast-enhanced (CE) T1-weighted imaging. In addition to routine head a… Show more

“…When conditions permit, we recommend that patients undergo examination of all three MRI sequences. These three sequences have also been applied in other tumours of head and neck under different field strength (1.5 T and 3.0 T), and satisfactory results have been achieved [41,42]. These three sequences are relatively mature, stable and reproducible, especially DWI and SWI, which can be easily integrated into a conventional MR examination at AUC area under curve, CI confidence interval, PPV positive predictive value, NPV negative predictive value, ADC apparent diffusion coefficient, ITSS intratumoral susceptibility signal, V e EES fractional volume.…”

“…Despite the advancement in radiotherapy, chemotherapy and surgery, the 5‐year survival rate of this disease is still not satisfactory 9‐12 . Survival rate improvement requires more understanding of initiation and progression of TSCC 6,13,14 . Therefore, more works should be performed to explain the molecular mechanisms and process, which may identify new effective targets for TSCC treatment.…”
