The tasks of dynamic compensation of reactive power are solved by means of flexible AC transmission systems using power electronics devices. The object of this study is a variable voltage regulator with a capacitive load. This paper considered the problem of the efficiency of phase voltage regulation on the capacitor battery to use it as a source to compensate for reactive power. The results of the study are presented, which justify the effectiveness of the technique for obtaining a dynamic source of reactive power based on the use of a thyristor voltage regulator with a capacitive load. A comparative study of two regimes of the regulator was carried out: the phase-controlled mode of closing fully controlled semiconductor gates and the phase-controlled mode for opening single-core semiconductor gates. Analytical expressions for angular characteristics of power according to the main harmonics are derived. It is shown that under the first mode the current through the capacitor is capacitive, which makes it possible to obtain a thyristor-adjustable capacitor battery for dynamic compensation of reactive power in power supply systems. It was found that under the second mode, simultaneously with the regulation of reactive power, there is a phenomenon of consumption from the active power supply network according to the main harmonics. This means that the regulation of current through an ideal capacity using ideal phase-controlled semiconductor gates is accompanied by the consumption of the active component of the current from the power supply network. The resulting component of active power in the electrical circuit without active resistances is proposed to be called "active artificial shear power". The results have been confirmed by studies on virtual models

Flexible AC transmission systems that are built by using modern advances in power electronics are key components of smart grids. The object of research is a thyristor-controlled reactor, which is used as part of a static reactive power compensator to control the reactive power in the transmission and distribution electrical networks of power supply systems. It is proposed to use two-operation semiconductor gates in the regulator, which made it possible to obtain qualitatively new adjusting properties. The analysis of reactor power under the mode of phase control of the conductive state of gates by setting the moments of their closing time was carried out. Analytical expressions for angular power characteristics of the main harmonic were derived. It was revealed that by regulating, based on the phase principle, the conductive state of ideal semiconductor gates, which are switched on in series with ideal inductance, along with the adjustment of reactive power, the phenomenon of consumption of active power from the grid at the main harmonic is observed. It is shown that the reason for this is artificially obtained, with the help of semiconductor gates, active-inductive nature of the angle of displacement of the main harmonic of the current in the reactor relative to the voltage of the power supply. The study results prove the effect of adjusting the active power by a thyristor-regulated reactor. Research involving a virtual model illustrated the adjustment of the active power component of a synchronous generator by the effect on the rotor speed during gate adjustment of reactor power. The active power resource obtained in the process of thyristor adjustment of the reactor is commensurate with its installed capacity

A study of the power balance of the semiconductor voltage regulator on an active load with phase control by two-operation thyristors was carried out. The suitability of its use for simultaneous obtaining of the reactive power resource for distribution electric networks has been confirmed. According to the concept of intelligent electrical networks, such devices belong to the class of flexible alternating current transmission systems, and they can be the basis for building virtual energy sources. The power components for individual components of the regulator, including the thyristor block, were studied. The spectral method of describing currents and voltages at the regulator sections is applied. The obtained results of theoretical studies were confirmed by an example with numerical calculations, which made it possible to clarify the physical essence of energy transformations during voltage regulation.
