Multi-Epoch Analysis of a Satellite Constellation to Identify Value Robust Deployment across Uncertain Futures

Abstract: The value of a system depends heavily on the future contexts it will encounter. For complex space systems with multi-year design and deployment phases, it is useful to design a system so that it delivers value to stakeholders over a wide range of future contexts. EpochEra Analysis, a computational scenario planning approach, decomposes the lifecycle of a system into sequential epochs that each have fixed contexts and value expectations. This paper applies Multi-Epoch Analysis (a subset of Epoch-Era Analysis) a… Show more

“…The authors of [18], proposed to factor in a single qualitative metric, survivability, to illustrate how the design optimization process for a space tug could also be influenced by such kinds of properties. Similarly, [19] combined multi-epoch analysis with conventional tradespace exploration to architect satellite constellations that maximized the delivered value regardless of future context changes. The latter study integrated value-robustness in the tradespace process, thus enhancing the decision process with qualitative attributes.…”

“…As it goes through several epochs it illustrates the systems potential value over time. For design use, epoch-era analysis can be combined with trade-space analysis where a trade-space exploration is performed in each epoch and several epochs make up one era, this enables comparison of short term and long term value [42]. Effective software is essential for SoS to enable efficient interoperability and provide cybersecurity.…”
