Firms must adapt to a business environment in constant flux. Economic and political factors and the constant interruption of new technologies force firms and organizations to change and to adapt, so that they are not left behind. Over recent years, the development of disruptive innovations has completely revolutionized past scenarios. These innovations break with what is already established and firms from various sectors face no choice other than to incorporate them into their project management portfolios, so as to ensure survival and business sustainability. Using MIVES methodology as its foundation, a business sustainability management model is presented in this paper for the management of disruptive innovation projects that a firm may wish to develop within a given sector. The management model is designed to facilitate disruptive innovation project management for firms within technological-industrial sectors, by assessing the sustainability of the project. The model is applied to two firms, one from the machine-tooling sector and another from the construction sector. Finally, a sensitivity analysis was performed, the results of which verified the validity and the stability of the proposed model.

Historic buildings are at the center of cultural and economic interests, due to issues related to their conservation and protection as well as their use and technical-performance efficiency. They are often considered within the accepted meaning of ‘assets-resource’. In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the research and development of methodologies to appropriately intervene on this type of heritage assets. This contribution defines a methodology to select interventions capable of combining protection requirements with performance upgrading, as part of integrated seismic improvement and energy-environmental retrofit strategies. The aim is to develop a tool that not only supports Public Administrations in the planning/designing of appropriate interventions but also private investors in a partnership perspective. Given the need to use a multidisciplinary and multi-criteria approach, the AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) method has been used; it allows for the comparison of various intervention alternatives on the basis of certain evaluation criteria, aimed at obtaining a preference index. This approach allows us to support the decision-maker in making the most appropriate choice, according to a rationally structured procedure.

Evaluation of the Application of Municipal Solid Waste Incinerator (Mswi) Ash in Civil Engineering Using a Sustainability Approach

Incineration is regarded as one of the common methods for energy recovery as well as waste reduction, due to the high amount of waste generation in major cities; for instance Tehran (7000-8000 ton/day), and lack of sufficient landfill. The proper treatment and recycling of municipal solid waste incinerator (MSWI) residual ashes is one of the challenges which decision makers are faced with. In order to investigate the feasibility of the recycling of ashes, the sustainability index is considered. This evaluation is carried out by means of the multi-criteria decision-making approach for assessing sustainability (MIVES) and the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) as a conventional decision-making tool. Six possible scenarios in Iran was determined, BA/FA landfilled with solid waste system (current scenario), Partial substitute of raw materials for cement/concrete, Ceramics and glass/glass-ceramics production, Geotechnical applications, use of BA/FA as alternative adsorbent and Fertilizers in agricultural soils. The assessment was accomplished through 25 questionnaires distributed among experts which includes environmentalists, governmental decision makers, academics, and technical groups. The questionnaires comprised of 33 pairwise comparison matrices, and the experts were asked to systematically compare elements of the constructed hierarchy in numerical terms. According to the results, reusing MSWI ash as a partial substitute for raw materials in cement/concrete scored highest in ranking among other potential MSWM scenarios (with a relative weight of 0.234). The results also reveal that the utilization of BA/FA as alternative adsorbents and as fertilizers in agricultural soils are not to be currently pursued in Iran (with relative weights of 0.117 and 0.129 respectively).
