Mud-packing frog: A novel breeding behaviour and parental care in a stream dwelling new species of Nyctibatrachus (Amphibia, Anura, Nyctibatrachidae)

Abstract: Reproductive modes are diverse and unique in anurans. Selective pressures of evolution, ecology and environment are attributed to such diverse reproductive modes. Globally forty different reproductive modes in anurans have been described to date. The genus Nyctibatrachus has been recently revised and belongs to an ancient lineage of frog families in the Western Ghats of India. Species of this genus are known to exhibit mountain associated clade endemism and novel breeding behaviours. The purpose of this study … Show more

“…nov. Krutha et al and morphological information and provided novel behavioral observations. This was followed by discovery of a new mud packing behavior and description of a new species by Gururaja et al (2014) and seven new species of small sized night frogs by Garg et al (2017). All these papers elucidated our limitations in the knowledge of amphibian diversity in Western Ghats biodiversity hotspot.…”

“…The genus Nyctibatrachus was discovered by Boulenger in 1882 and recently Biju et al (2011) revised its taxonomy. At present there are 28 species in Nyctibatrachus (Gururaja et al 2014). They are predominantly stream dwelling and found in torrent streams or in the leaf litter on the forest floor.…”

“…, ), frontiers of knowledge in ecology and evolutionary history are being expanded by discovery of novel reproductive modes and life history traits. For example, nest building in Nyctibatrachus kumbara Gururaja, Dinesh, Priti and Ravikanth (Gururaja et al ., ) and Rhacophorus lateralis Boulenger (Biju, ) and foot‐flagging behaviour in Micrixalus aff. saxicola Jerdon (Gururaja, ; Preininger et al ., , b) are some of the most recent discoveries in anurans.…”
