Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma Arising From Pleomorphic Adenoma of the Soft Palate

Abstract: Carcinoma arising in pleomorphic adenoma is a rare entity. A case of mucoepidermoid carcinoma in pleomorphic adenoma occurring in the soft palate of a 40-year-old woman is reported. An intraoral excision of the tumor was performed. Histopathological examination revealed high-grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma proliferated in pleomorphic adenoma with free surgical margin. The patient received adjuvant neck radiotherapy. She remains free of disease 16 months post-treatment.

“…These morphological variations of PA may show similarity with other benign and malignant salivary gland tumors and may create problems in the differential diagnosis [1,2]. On the other hand, different types of malignant salivary gland tumors may arise from a PA [3,4]. These malignant tumors are usually high-grade and show invasive growth [4].…”

“…Most CEPAs occur in the parotid gland (2)(3)(4)6). The risk of malignant transformation can appear highly in either long-standing or recurrent pleomorphic adenomas (1,3,5,7). It is extremely rare in young patients.…”
