Muco-epidermoid tumours of the anal canal

Abstract: SYNOPSISThe pathology of 21 cases of muco-epidermoid carcinoma of the anal canal is described. These tumours are defined as squamous or transitional cell carcinomas containing areas which secrete mucin of undoubted epithelial origin within the clumps of tumour cells. They are found in that part of the anal canal just above the dentate line where the epithelium is variable in type and represents an embryological transition between rectal and squamous mucous membrane. The histogenesis of these tumours is discuss… Show more

“…They have also been found in the esophagus [12], anus [13] and vagina [14] where squamous cell carcinomas predominate. In this series, the incidence of ASC of the pancreas was 2.1% (7/327), which was in the range of 0.9–3.8% in previous reports (table 3) [4,15,16,17,18].…”

“…Kay 2 examined this disease in 1954, and a total of 56 cases have been reported to date. [1][2][3][4][5][6] Table 2 shows a summary of the characteristics of these reported cases. The histogenesis of mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the anus has been discussed.…”

“…Only 56 cases have been reported previously. [1][2][3][4][5][6] The origin of this tumor has been debated, tumor was composed of goblet-cell-type mucous cells and the solid sheets. The mucous cells were seen sporadically, and the solid sheets consisted of large nonkeratinizing or spindle-shaped cells.…”

“…Morson ( 15) states that basaloid, mucoepidermoid and some ordinary squamous carcinomas arise in the ATZ. This concept is based on studies on the location of anal canal tumours, many of which were mainly located above the dentate line (14,17,20). Other evidence for this concept would be the demonstration of precancerous changes located to the ATZ in association with such tumours.…”
