Mucinous adenocarcinoma of the renal pelvis with adenocarcinoma in situ of the ureter

Abstract: Primary epithelial tumor of the renal pelvis is rare, and adenocarcinomas account for less than 1% of malignancies arising from the epithelium of the renal pelvis. We describe in this study a case of a 56-year old male patient who presented with an abdominal mass and dull aching pain for one year. A diagnosis of hydronephrosis of the right kidney was made based on imaging studies. Grossly, the entire kidney was converted into a cystic mass measuring 16 × 12 × 10 cm and filled with gelatinous material along wit… Show more

“…Ho et al suggested that serum CEA should be checked immediately during or after surgery if the gross examination reveals a hint of the diagnosis [10]. CEA and CA19-9 may act as independent markers for prognosis and recurrence of mucinous adenocarcinoma, however, they can be normal in some cases [1]. Although unique imaging features are lacking to differentiate mucinous adenocarcinoma from common renal tumors, there are some red-flag ideas to share.…”

“…Cases of urinary mucinous adenocarcinoma have previously been reported in the kidney, prostate, bladder, and the ureter [1][2][3][4][5]. Mucinous adenocarcinoma of the renal pelvis is both rare and highly lethal.…”

“…Raphael et al [11] have proved that preoperative serum CEA and CA-19-9 levels may be helpful for the diagnosis and act as biomarkers for predicting prognosis and recurrence. Xiong et al [12] reported that only about 100 cases had been reported in the English studies, such as PubMed, Elsevier, Embase, Springer and EBSCO.…”
