MRSA compendium of epidemiology, transmission, pathophysiology, treatment, and prevention within one health framework

Abstract: Staphylococcus aureus is recognized as commensal as well as opportunistic pathogen of humans and animals. Methicillin resistant strain of S. aureus (MRSA) has emerged as a major pathogen in hospitals, community and veterinary settings that compromises the public health and livestock production. MRSA basically emerged from MSSA after acquiring SCCmec element through gene transfer containing mecA gene responsible for encoding PBP-2α. This protein renders the MRSA resistant to most of the β-lactam antibiotics. Du… Show more

“…Since the discovery of antibiotics in the last century, pathogenic microorganism infections have been effectively controlled for a long period. However, bacterial resistance to antibacterial drugs has emerged in recent decades because of the inappropriate and irregular abuse of antibiotics, which then caused most of the clinical drugs to become ineffective (Shoaib et al., 2022). Nowadays, the emerging resistance has made the drug‐resistant bacteria infection to be one of the most intractable infectious diseases in recent years, and the development of new therapeutically antibacterial agents against multidrug‐resistant pathogens is now critically crucial and urgent for the future maintenance of public health.…”

“…Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) seriously threatens human and animal health, however, up to now, an effective vaccine against S. aureus is not yet available on the market [ 23 , 24 ]. IsdB3, as the immunodominant domain of the iron surface determinant B protein (IsdB) from S. aureus shows strong immunogenicity, but its immunoprotective effect is yet to be further enhanced, which indicates a new adjuvant to boost the immunogenicity of IsdB3 proteins is very imperative for preventing S. aureus infection.…”

“…MRSA is an ecological problem that impacts human, animal, and environmental health. Addressing this problem requires a clear knowledge of its prevalence in the healthy population, environment, and animals at the national level to support effective 'One Health' prevention and control strategies [14]. Systematic reviews are exhaustive and consider every bit of evidence on the topic, a few on MRSA have been carried out in some countries in the world [4,5] but in Cameroon none to our knowledge.…”
