MR Imaging of Ventral Thalamic Nuclei

Abstract: BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE:The Vim and VPL are important target regions of the thalamus for DBS. Our aim was to clarify the anatomic locations of the ventral thalamic nuclei, including the Vim and VPL, on MR imaging.

“…This pathway is important for movement control. 29 The middle cerebellar peduncle is a fiber tract originating in the pontine nuclei, which send axons to the contralateral cerebellar cortex; most of these axons pass through the contralateral middle cerebellar peduncle. This intimately connected pathway presumably sends somatosensory movement-related information to the cerebellum.…”

“…8 With the development of DTI, several studies have been conducted using DTI for identification of the thalamic nuclei and somatotopy of the somatosensory tracts. 8,13,[30][31][32][33] Some of these studies have attempted to identify the thalamic nuclei by using a different directionality, and other studies have attempted to identify them by using their connectivity with cortical areas. 8,13,30,31,33 In 2003, Behrens et al 20 attempted to identify the thalamic nuclei by using a probabilistic tractography algorithm.…”

“…They reported the locations of each thalamic nucleus, including the VPL nucleus, by using connectivity with the functionally relevant cortices. Recently, Yamada et al 32 (2010) constructed a DTT for the pyramidal tract, STP, and cerebellothalamocortical tract. They identified the VPL nucleus and ventrointermediate nucleus by using the relationship of the above 3 tracts.…”

“…Human vision, with the capability of discerning 1/3 of a millimetre, on average is the limiting factor in the stereotactic frame precision. The evolution of neuroimaging provides an insight into neuroanatomical structures, which in the past could be seen only on post-mortem stained brain tissue [4,5]. Advances in technology have opened up new possibilities during preoperative planning, neurosurgical intervention, and intraoperative strategy.…”
