“…The nodules have a low signal on all sequences and show intervening fibrous stroma. 13,14 Malakoplakia occurs because of abnormal macrophage function, usually in adults with underlying systemic disorders and a disrupted response to infection. Although renal parenchymal malakoplakia is extremely rare in children, sonography is usually the first imaging modality used for diagnosis of this condition.…”

“…Malakoplakia also occurs in the bile duct system and in the gallbladder (Sahel et al 1976;Charpentier et al 1983;Hide et al 2001;Regragui et al 2003;Agnarsdottir et al 2004;Di Tommaso et al 2005). Interestingly, renal and intestinal malakoplakia has been repeatedly observed in patients after liver transplantation (Rull et al 1995;Kamishima et al 2000;Weinrach et al 2004), but this association is likely to be based on immunosuppression, because a similar association has been seen in renal graft recipients (Ourahma et al 1996;Berney et al 1999).…”

“…Malakoplakia has also been reported in SOT other than kidney transplantation; for example, liver transplantation with colon and kidney involvement, cardiac transplantation with cutaneous form; and it has also manifested as epididymitis and rectal mass . In addition, malakoplakia has been reported in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, with GI tract and pleural involvement caused by Rhodococcus equi .…”

“…In some patients, presentation of malakoplakia was associated with the management of previous rejection 2,7,19,21,23,31 ; this is not a constant description (22% of cases), but in up to 74% of cases, chronic dysfunction of the allograft is present. E. coli is the most frequently isolated microorganism in these cases (61% of cases), even though Malakoplakia has also been reported in SOT other than kidney transplantation; for example, liver transplantation with colon 40-42 and kidney involvement, 43 cardiac transplantation with cutaneous form 44 ;…”
