MPLS-based reduction of flow table entries in SDN switches supporting multipath transmission

Abstract: In the paper, a new mechanism for Software-Defined Networking (SDN) flow aggregation accompanied with multipath transmission is proposed. The aggregation results in a low number of flow entries in core switches. This type of scalability improvement of flow processing is obtained thanks to application of the procedure based on introduction of centrally managed MPLS label distribution performed by an SDN controller. Moreover, multipath transmission improves network resource utilization. The proposed mechanism doe… Show more

“…In Reference 14, the authors present a rule compressor strategy using “Ruleblender” scheme which uses spanning tree to for match algorithm as well as they reduced the size of the packet. They incorporate the jump flow to divide the rules in sections and finally claimed to decrease the flow table burden at the forwarding plane.…”

“…This delay also produces a worst effect especially on User Datagram Protocol (UDP) scenario 13 . Another problem arises in UDP scenario is the duplicate packets which makes the packet to be disorderedly arrived at destination 14 …”

“…For example, in the topology in Figure 2, the controller computes two paths passing between switches A and G and installs flow rules along two paths (e.g., (A-B-G) and (A-C-D-G)). This mechanism is faster than the reactive failure recovery mechanism because there is less controller intervention during link failure [5,6]. However, there are also some disadvantages associated with this mechanism.…”

“…Legacy Wide-Area-Networks (WAN) architectures, like MPLS-IP and MPLS-TP [6], create limitations as energy utilities adopt the cloud or utilize commodity Internet connections in their operational technology (OT) networks. The enterprises or energy sector, that is the main application discussed in this article, are shifting to Software-Defined Wide Area Network (SD-WAN) to ensure seamless cloud migration, reduced capital expenditure (CAPEX), infrastructure automation, virtualisation and improved user collaboration [7].…”
