m. until 1 a.m. Sunday through Thursday evenings during the academic year. Data showed that the number of questions asked during late-night chat hours was comparable to the number being asked during regular reference chat hours. Findings showed that the complexity of the chat questions being asked after hours was greater than that of chat questions asked during regular hours and that of reference desk transactions as a whole. Late-night chat reference was a valuable exercise in meeting users at their point of need.

Cette revue de littérature porte sur la référence virtuelle par clavardage et messagerie instantanée. Les compétences requises des bibliothécaires sont présentées. L’évolution du rôle éducatif du bibliothécaire avec l’avènement de la référence par clavardage est également décrite. Nous portons attention aux particularités de ce nouvel environnement de travail.This literature review focuses on virtual reference using online chat and instant messaging. The competencies required of librarians are outlined. The evolution of the educational role of librarians since the advent of online chat is also described. The authors pay special attention to the nature of this new work environment.Esta revista literaria aborda la referencia virtual a través del chat y de la mensajería instantánea. Se presentan las competencias que deben adquirir los bibliotecarios, y se describe la evolución de la función educativa del bibliotecario, con el surgimiento de las referencias por chat. Se detallan especialmente las particularidades de este nuevo entorno de trabajo
