Movements of ultrasonically tagged brown trout (Sulmo trutta L.) in Lake Constance

Abstract: adult lake dwelling brown trout (Sulmo /ru//u L.) were tagged with ultrasonic transmitters and tracked almost continuously for up to 13 days. Two behaviour types were observed: (a) random movement in locally restricted areas and (b) excursions of up to 40 km distance. Swimming activity during the day was significantly higher than at night in most experiments. In summer swimming depth ranged between 8 and 16 m, and in winter between 0 and 3 m. The preferred water temperature was about 14" C in the thermally str… Show more

“…Brown trout used well-illuminated pelagic habitat in June and September and preyed selectively on DR whitefish. In addition to lower light level, the habitat selection in the vicinity of the bottom provides efficient refuge against pelagic cruising predators such as brown trout (Schulz & Berg 1992). Our results indicate that diel and seasonal habitat selection by DR whitefish was strongly regulated by the risk of predation.…”

“…It was assumed that there were no significant tagging influences on fish behaviour in the present study as transmitters <0·8% of individual body mass were used. Other authors observed no effects on growth and fish behaviour of transmitters <1·6%(Ross & McCormick, 1981;Lucas, 1989; Baade & Fredrich, 1998), <2·5%(Thoreaux & Baras, 1996) or <5%(Schulz & Berg, 1992). Electrofishing was the most useful catch method whereas weir baskets or trawl catches damaged the skin of the fish considerably (unpubl.…”

“…It was assumed that tagging did not influence fish behaviour as transmitters were smaller than 2% of individual asp body weight (Ross and McCormick, 1981; Lucas, 1989; Schulz and Berg, 1992; Thoreau and Baras, 1996; Huber and Kirchhofer, 1998; Martinelli et al., 1998). Unfavourable weather conditions (high temperatures) negatively influenced tagging success; all three fish tagged according to the same method as others but in water temperature >20°C died within a month near the release site.…”
