Movement System Diagnoses for Balance Dysfunction: Recommendations From the Academy of Neurologic Physical Therapy’s Movement System Task Force

Abstract: The movement system was identified as the focus of our expertise as physical therapists in the revised vision statement for the profession adopted by American Physical Therapy Association in 2013. Attaining success with the profession’s vision requires the development of movement system diagnoses that will be useful in clinical practice, research, and education. To date, only a few movement system diagnoses have been identified and described, and none of these specifically address balance dysfunction. Over the… Show more

“…First, the model emphasizes the centrality of movement analysis to physical therapy practice, which aligns with the APTA's Vision for physical therapists to be movement experts. Although movement system frameworks have been developed in other specialty areas, [24][25][26][27] we are unaware of similar efforts in cardiovascular and pulmonary physical therapy. Given that a focus on movement is a hallmark of expert practitioners, 28 the use of a framework that focuses on movement analysis may hasten the transition from novice to expert practitioners.…”

“…Balance ability, an essential factor in gait ability, is the ability to maintain balance against numerical movement and external stimuli, which reduces muscle weakness due to decreased physical activity and is highly associated with risk of fall due to dynamic balance ability during gait [29,30]. Physical changes due to aging lead to a decrease in gait function by reducing balance, and it is highly related to the incidence of injuries in the elderly [31].…”

“…Addressing both proprioceptive deficits and broader motor control aspects is essential for improving postural stability in individuals with osteoporosis ( 72 ). Healthcare professionals can design tailored rehabilitation strategies that not only focus on bone health but also incorporate sensory training, address muscular imbalances, and promote optimal movement patterns ( 73 ). These interventions may help reduce falls, fractures, and associated morbidity, ultimately enhancing the quality of life and functional independence of individuals with osteoporosis ( 74 ).…”
