“…Estimates of conduit diameter N of 20 þ 5 m have been made by observations [1] and indirectly from magma ascent velocities estimated from amphibole reaction rims [21]. A chamber depth of 7.2 km was estimated by Pallister [22]. We take a nucleation density of 10 14 m 33 to be consistent with observations of microphenocrysts abundance by Cashman and Blundy [8] 312 m/s.…”

“…A change from gas-rich scoriacious dome textures to gas-poor smooth dome textures between 1980 and 1986 is evidence for progressively more degassing within the conduit with time [Anderson and Fink, 1990]. Further contributing to an increase in viscosity, the silica content of the extruded domes increased between 1980 and 1986 [Pallister et al, 1992]. The 2004 eruption at MSH also had high multiplet efficiency that coincided with the extrusion of solidified and highly degassed spines that formed up to 1 km below the vent .…”

“…It appears that during the past 2200 years, the compositional range of magma erupted during a given eruptive period has become more restricted towards dacite with time (cf. Pallister et al, 1992 ) are greater than those produced during the Goat Rocks (0.5 km 3 ) and current (<0.5 km 3 ) eruptive periods (Carey et al, 1989;Criswell, 1989).…”
