Motor Neuron Disease and Heavy Manual Labor: An Epidemiologic Survey of Värmland County, Sweden

Abstract: 89 cases of motor neuron disease (MND) were identified in Värmland County during the period 1970–1981. This amounts to an annual incidence rate of 2.6 per 100,000 population, sex- and age-adjusted to the USA population, 1.7. The average point prevalence was 8.5 per 100,000 population and the median duration of MND was 25 months. 95% of the MND cases in Värmland County were coded MND on their death certificates. MND was overrepresentated in persons performing heavy manual labor. A significantly higher mortality… Show more

“…Värmland county had high mortality figures for both diseases. As mentioned above, parts of Värmland county have been pointed out before as high-risk zones for MS [17], and investigators [23,24] have also observed a high incidence of ALS in this region (Värmland, Skaraborg) in recent decades. This leads us to the question about the cause.…”

“…In addition, this study showed that MS mortality was very high in the county of Värmland in western Sweden during four decades [2]. Other reports had previously supported a high occurrence of MS in this area [3], and interestingly, yet another team had demonstrated a high incidence of ALS in the same region [4,5]. …”

“…Exceptions are cigarette smoking [9,10] and exposure to organic solvents [11,12,13]. Other risk factors mentioned for MS are Epstein-Barr virus, vitamin D deficiency, female gender, and ethnicity [14] and for ALS, heavy manual labor [5]. There is also, to our knowledge, no evidence for an overlap in the genetic basis for MS and sporadic ALS.…”

“…Шпанска студија (47) У последњих десетак година је описано постојање више фактора ризика за настанак ALSa. Наводе се: тежак физички рад (45,48), интензивно бављење спортом (професионални фудбалери и маратонци), пушење, траума, излагање тешким металима, олову и живи (49,50,51). Регистрована је повећана учесталост механичке трауме у болесника са ALS у поређењу са контролном групом (32,52,53,54).…”
