ethnic groups are more affected by type 2 diabetes than others. Persons of African and Hispanic descents are at higher risk than whites for developing type 2 diabetes. 2 Children from families with diabetes are also at increased risk for type 2 diabetes; frequency of a history of type 2 diabetes in a first-or second-degree relative ranged from 74% to 100% in 1 study. 4 Brown et al. 5 have shown that depression appears to increase the risk of developing diabetes by approximately 23% in young adults. Depressive symptoms are also high in persons with chronic illnesses including diabetes. 6,7 Children of mothers with diabetes are at increased risk for the disease. 8 Past studies have indicated that children of mothers with chronic illness are at risk of psychological maladjustment. 9,10 In a study by Stein and Newcomb, 11 it was shown that depressed mood in ill mothers correlated with children's behavioral problems. Parental depression, particularly maternal depression, disrupts attachment and places children at increased risk for psychosocial difficulties and a range of adjustment problems. 12,13 We hypothesized that children whose mothers are newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes may show depressive symptoms since the illness increases the likelihood that the mother will experience psychological distress, economic difficulties, and troubles in family relationships, which are risk factors for psychopathology in children. 14 In a study of 76 Hispanic patients with diabetes, Chesla et al. 15 reported that 23% of the patients had troubling changes in family relationships after diagnosis. The current study was therefore designed to examine whether children and adolescents of mothers with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes are at increased risk for psychopathology. Introduction: Disorders of circadian rhythms have been reported in studies of both depressed children and of depressed adolescents. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether there is a relationship between the 24-hour spectral power (24h SP) of the activity/rest rhythm and the clinical course of depression in adolescents. Methods: Six 14 to 17-year-old adolescents were recruited for the study. They were all suffering from major depressive disorder, according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th edition (DSM-IV) criteria, as identified by the Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School Aged Children: Present and Lifetime Version (K-SADS-PL). Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Children's Depression Rating Scale -Revised (CDRS-R) and clinical evaluations. Locomotor activity was monitored over a period of 13 consecutive weeks. Activity was measured for 10-minute periods using wrist-worn activity monitors. All patients were prescribed sertraline from after the first week up until the end of the study. Results: We found a relationship between high CDRS values and low 24-hour spectral power. Conclusions: The 24h SP of the activity/rest rhythm correlated significantly (negatively) with the clinical ratings of depression.

Adolescent temperament, perceived social support, and depressive tendencies as predictors of depressive tendencies in young adulthood

A 5 year longitudinal study investigated the interrelations of temperament dimensions (negative emotionality, activity, and sociability), perceived social support (friend, significant other, and family support), and depressive tendencies. Temperament (EASTS; Buss, 1991), perceived social support (PSS‐R; Blumenthal, Burg, Barefoot, Williams, Haney and Zimet, 1987) and depressive tendencies (a modified version of the BDI) were measured by self‐reports in a randomly selected, community‐based sample of 302 adolescents at age 15, and depressive tendencies were measured again five years later at age 20. The authors hypothesized a model comprising direct as well as mediated effects between the adolescent predictor variables and depressive tendencies in young adulthood. The structural modelling analyses supported these hypotheses in part, and also indicated some qualitative sex differences. For both girls and boys, a significant direct as well as mediating role was indicated for the current level of depressive tendencies: depressive tendencies at age 15 predicted depressive tendencies at age 20, also mediating the effects of negative emotionality at age 15, and additionally mediating the effects of a low level of activity in girls and a low level of family support in boys. Furthermore, even when the prior level of depressive tendencies was controlled, direct effects were indicated in boys for a low level of sociability, and in girls for significant other support, which also mediated the effects of a low level of sociability. These results highlight the importance of the sex‐differentiated interplay of both intrapersonal and psychosocial factors in relation to depressive tendencies both during adolescence and from adolescence to young adulthood.
