Purpose The purpose of this paper is to establish the influence of shopping motivations on Chinese fashion retail engagement relative to demographics, monthly spend on fashion items and high street/electronic commerce (e-commerce) preference. This is to determine how international fashion retailers should design more effective retails channels, expanding upon established theory in Hedonic and utilitarian motivations. While earlier research suggests shopping motivations associate with demographics while influencing retail channel preference and consumer spending, much of this exploration is Western focused, with all variables being influential. However, the degree to which these apply to China, and the unique fingerprint of influential motivations remains unknown. This paper answers these questions to allow international retailers to develop more efficient marketing strategies and design more effective retail channels. Design/methodology/approach In all, 403 Chinese consumers generalisable to the broader population were surveyed on their hedonic and utilitarian motivations to shop for fashion apparel in high street and e-commerce environments. Statistical analysis was commenced through direct logistic regression and MANOVA. Findings Demographics have limited association with shopping motivations, with gender and age only producing small effect sizes, while occupation, income and education has no significance. High street store preference is influenced by adventure and social shopping and e-commerce preference only by idea shopping. Spending over ¥1k per month on fashion apparel is influenced by gratification and idea shopping, and regular spending habits inspired by value shopping. Originality/value This empirical paper characterises the fingerprint of shopping motivations’ influence as singular to China while proving their limitation and need for a wider plethora of influential factors to be recognised.

O exercício físico é uma das indicações da "World Health Organization" (WHO) para se ter um estilo de vida saudável. Apesar de ser uma informação de conhecimento da maioria, o sedentarismo ainda atinge um grande número de indivíduos. Dentro deste contexto, a corrida de rua vem se tornando uma alternativa de exercício físico cada vez mais popular para combater o sedentarismo e também como forma de lazer. Assim, este estudo teve como objetivo comparar corredores que têm optado por correr com uma orientação profissional (corredores orientados) e aqueles que correm sem orientação (corredores autônomos) em suas motivações para correr e para participar de eventos de corrida de rua. Os sujeitos foram adultos participantes de uma corrida de rua na cidade de Ribeirão Preto (n = 599). Foram medidas cinco dimensões da motivação: divertimento, competência, aparência, fatores sociais e saúde 1 . Os resultados mostraram que os participantes eram bastante motivados nas cinco dimensões. Em termos descritivos, saúde foi considerada a dimensão mais importante tanto para correr como para participar de eventos. Contudo, os motivos de saúde não diferiram quem busca uma orientação para correr e quem corre por conta própria. Entretanto, existem diferenças entre corredores orientados e corredores autônomos nos motivos de "competência" e "fatores sociais" para correr e no motivo "fatores sociais" para participar de eventos. Os corredores orientados tiveram índices maiores de motivação em relação aos corredores autônomos tanto para correr como para participar de eventos de corrida. Do ponto de vista da gestão do esporte, o resultado mais importante do presente estudo foi que corredores orientados apresentaram maiores níveis em relação aos corredores autônomos nas suas motivações de competência e de interações sociais.

Research on cultural capital has been very attentive to cultural participation. In numerous explorations of the social basis of participatory practices, a division between cultural engagement and disengagement has been frequently observed. In accordance with Bourdieu’s seminal work on taste, that divide has been predominantly associated with social class issues. But research has only weakly explored the rationale behind people’s behaviours in this regard. This article explores rationales for non-participation and reaches significant conclusions about these. First, non-participatory practices are very much spread across the social structure, and they are associated with different reasons (disliking, lack of time, money, information, habits, and access to venues). Second, the reasons provided by survey interviewees are affected differently by income levels, age and the size of the places people live in, amongst other important variables. Third, even though the effect of those variables on the reasons changes according to the legitimacy of the activities in which interviewees do not take part in, differences related to the status of the activities are less significant than similarities. I use data from Chile, collected in 2012, and the findings are linked to those of previous analyses undertaken in other countries.
