ABSTRACTDuring the last decade, studying the patterns of taste and cultural participation has been increasingly important in academic debates. Pierre Bourdieu's work has been acknowledged as a key reference in the area. In this article we show results of an empirical research that support two of the most significant ideas of this intellectual: the homology thesis, and the idea of the relationship between culture and structure. In other words, against the idea of an increasingly individualised society, this study shows how cultural participatory patterns in Chile are strongly influenced by social class. Moreover, age is highlighted as a very important variable for understanding the same phenomenon. In addition, from a methodological approach, we make use of a statistical technique that the French author made famous, multiple correspondence analysis. Key words:Taste -Inequalities -Cultural participation -Social class -Culture -Age -Multiple correspondence analysis.
Contrary to the idea that neighbourhood cohesion is something that inherently benefits the poor or counterbalances the forces of social exclusion, in this article we argue that it can also function as a mechanism of cumulative advantage. In order to explore this proposal, we offer a definition and key dimensions of neighbourhood cohesion based on three components: place attachment, local relations and commitment to the local common good. We test our proposal in a highly segregated Latin American city: Santiago, Chile. A combination of survey data and georeferenced information was obtained from a random sample of 700 residents. The results reveal the existence of four neighbourhood cohesion types: Communitarians, Belongers, Strangers and Outsiders. As expected, we found that people who reside in affluent areas and perceive themselves to live in more reputable neighbourhoods are those who report the strongest patterns of neighbourhood cohesion. We conclude by questioning the scope and effectiveness of policies which have promoted neighbourhood cohesion as a ‘tool’ of governance without first attempting to reduce socio-spatial rifts. We also ask whether these notable spatial differences in neighbourhood cohesion contribute to improving the overall social cohesion at the city level.
Research on cultural capital has been very attentive to cultural participation. In numerous explorations of the social basis of participatory practices, a division between cultural engagement and disengagement has been frequently observed. In accordance with Bourdieu’s seminal work on taste, that divide has been predominantly associated with social class issues. But research has only weakly explored the rationale behind people’s behaviours in this regard. This article explores rationales for non-participation and reaches significant conclusions about these. First, non-participatory practices are very much spread across the social structure, and they are associated with different reasons (disliking, lack of time, money, information, habits, and access to venues). Second, the reasons provided by survey interviewees are affected differently by income levels, age and the size of the places people live in, amongst other important variables. Third, even though the effect of those variables on the reasons changes according to the legitimacy of the activities in which interviewees do not take part in, differences related to the status of the activities are less significant than similarities. I use data from Chile, collected in 2012, and the findings are linked to those of previous analyses undertaken in other countries.
