In light of the increasing propensity toward unsportsmanlike behaviours that have caused the failure of the notion of fair play, this research tested a causal model of theoretically-predicted antecedents of sportspersonship, in which the two trait-related personality factors, self-control and aggressiveness, mediated the relationship between motivational orientations and sportspersonship. After examining the five-factor structure of the Multidimensional Sportspersonship Orientation Scale in a first sample of Italian athletes (n = 371, Mage = 26.57), the resulting 20-item four-factor model proved to be satisfactory and reliable. In a second sample (n = 814, Mage = 25.96) the proposed empirically-based model confirmed the important role played by self-control in mediating the relationship between ego orientation, aggressiveness, and sportspersonship. In terms of practical implications, the findings provide a more comprehensive conceptualization of the factors that differentiate the inter-and intra-individual characteristics in sportspersonship, thus allowing practitioners to develop effective intervention programs addressed to athletes. of the MSOS and the proposed causal model. Besides this, the cross-sectional nature of the study does not allow for inferring causal relationships between the variables.Further studies could examine the conceptual meta-theory of the "I cube" model (Slotter and Finkel, 2011) by analysing the interaction between its three processes of instigation, inhibition, and impellance, in order to better understand the problem of unsportsmanlike behaviours at competitive levels.

RESUMOO objetivo deste estudo foi analisar a adaptação transcultural da Escala de Motivação para o Esporte-II (SMS-II). Para tanto, foram realizados três estudos. O primeiro consistiu em traduzir a SMS-II para o português e adaptar seu conteúdo para o contexto brasileiro. No segundo, 364 atletas de modalidades individuais e coletivas responderam à versão adaptada da SMS-II. No estudo 3, 50 atletas responderam à SMS-II em dois momentos. O estudo 1 evidenciou que a versão em português contém questões claras e relevantes (CVC > 0,80). O estudo 2 mostrou que a SMS-II possui boa consistência interna em todas as dimensões (α > 0,70/CC > 0,70), com exceção da regulação introjetada (α > 0,61/CC > 0,56). A análise fatorial confirmatória demonstrou que todos os itens, exceto 1 e 7 (regulação introjetada), apresentaram cargas fatoriais aceitáveis; o modelo final da SMS-II (modificado) teve ajuste satisfatório e a análise multigrupos apontou a invariância entre homens e mulheres. Ademais, o estudo 3 evidenciou a estabilidade temporal da escala (CCI > 0,70). Concluiu-se que a adaptação transcultural da SMS-II para a língua portuguesa apresentou propriedades psicométricas aceitáveis; entretanto, suas limitações devem ser exploradas em futuras pesquisas.

La motivación puede ser considerada una de las temáticas más estudiadas en el contexto deportivo, principalmente por su relación con la intención futura de práctica y la satisfacción de los atletas. En busca de comprender mejor este fenómeno, este estudio verificó la correlación entre la motivación autodeterminada y diferentes constructos psicológicos en atletas de baloncesto femenino escolar. Como instrumentos se utilizaron: 1) Cuestionario Sociodemográfico; 2) Cuestionario de Motivación en el Deporte (SMS); 3) Cuestionario de Comportamientos parentales en el deporte (QCPD); 4) Escala de Autonomía Percibida en el Deporte; 5) Escala de Competencia Percibida en el Deporte; 6) Escala de Necesidad de Relación; 7) Escala de autodescripción (autoestima); 8) Escala de Satisfacción con la Vida; 9) Escala Breve de Resiliencia (BRS). Para el tratamiento de los datos se utilizó el paquete estadístico SPSS en la versión 21.0 para Windows, y se adoptó un nivel de significancia de p <0,05. Se realizaron las estadísticas descriptivas, media (M) y desviación estándar (DP). El análisis de la simetría de la distribución de las frecuencias (normalidad) fue efectuada mediante la utilización del test Shapiro-Wilk. Para conocer la asociación lineal (relación) entre diferentes variables, se calculó el coeficiente de correlación de Pearson para los datos que presentaron simetría y el coeficiente de correlación de Spearman para los datos que no presentaron simetría. Los datos presentaron correlaciones significativas entre la motivación y el comportamiento parental; entre la motivación y las necesidades de autonomía y competencia; y motivación con la autoestima. Se sugiere atención especial al comportamiento de los padres y profesores, en relación a la conducta en esta importante fase de desarrollo físico, social y deportivo. Motivation can be considered as one of the subjects most studied in the sportive context, mainly because of its relationship with the intention of further practice and with the athlete´s satisfaction. In order to better understand this phenomenon, this study assessed the correlation between the self-determined motivation and various types of psychological constructs in women´s basketball athletes in the school. The following tools were used: 1) Sociodemographic questionnaire; 2) Motivation in Sports questionnaire (SMS); 3) Parental Behavior in Sports questionnaire (QCPD); 4) Scale of Perceived Autonomy in Sports; 5) Scale of Perceived Skill in Sports; 6) Scale of Need of Relationship; 7) Scale of self-description (self-esteem); 8) Scale of Satisfaction with Life; 9) Brief Resilience Scale (BRS). Data treatment used the SPSS statistical package, version 21.0 for Windows, with a significance level of p<0,05. Descriptive statistics, average (M) and standard deviation (DP) were also used. The analysis of the symmetry of the distribution of frequencies (normality) was done using the Shapiro-Wilk test. To know the linear association (relationship) between different variables, the Pearson´s correlation coefficient was calculated for symmetric data and Spearman´s correlation coefficient for non-symmetrical data. The results showed significant correlations between motivation and parental behavior, motivation, and need for autonomy and skill, and motivation and self-esteem.
