Mother’s Emotional and Posttraumatic Reactions after a Preterm Birth: The Mother-Infant Interaction Is at Stake 12 Months after Birth

Abstract: ObjectivesVery preterm infants are known to be at risk of developmental disabilities and behavioural disorders. This condition is supposed to alter mother-infant interactions. Here we hypothesize that the parental coping with the very preterm birth may greatly influence mother-infant interactions.Methods100 dyads were included in 3 university hospitals in France. Preterm babies at higher risk of neurodevelopmental sequelae (PRI>10) were excluded to target the maternal determinants of mother-infant interaction.… Show more

“…The findings showed that the majority of the studied sample was between the age group of (20-30) years old and that is congruent with the findings of Petit, et al, Ionio, et al, Welch, et al, and Vazquez who found that their samples were in the same age group [17,11,23,22]. Regarding the mothers' educational level, about less than half of the studied sample had secondary school education.…”

“…Regarding the mothers' educational level, about less than half of the studied sample had secondary school education. This result is in the same line with [17]. On the other hand, this finding is dissimilar to the findings of Ionio, et al and Welch, et al who found that the majority of their samples had more than high school education [11,23].…”

“…However, the studies that have assessed these early interactions found that anxiety had inconsistent effects depending on its intensity, duration, co-occurrence with depression, and the tools used to measure it [ 12 , 18 , 39 ]. Attention is increasingly being focused on the symptoms of maternal posttraumatic stress, which is experienced by 35–45% of the mothers of premature infants at 6 months infant age, as noted in the OLIMPE study as in others [ 19 , 20 , 46 ]. Yet to date, very few studies have examined the influence of maternal traumatic reaction on the quality of mother-infant interaction at 6 months.…”

“…Atlikta ne viena studija, įrodanti, jog prieš laiką pagimdžiusios motinos patiria didesnį stresą (5, 7, 16,18,20), tačiau visuose mokslo darbuose yra naudotos skirtingos metodinės analizės, tad yra sunku lyginti tyrimų rezultatus.…”
